MASSIVE LIVE TV COVERAGE WORLDWIDE FOR THE MXGP OF SARDEGNA THIS WEEKEND!
The second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea welcomes the 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship for its third round, the MXGP of Sardegna, held on the deep sandy surface of the Crossodromo Communale “Le Dune” circuit near Riola Sardo.
The Sardinian venue has only ever seen MXGP overall winners from The Netherlands in its three previous GPs, although reigning World MXGP Champion Jorge Prado took race wins on both Saturday and Sunday last season, with the overall verdict eventually going to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team leader Jeffrey Herlings. The #1 plate holder leads the series by ten points from Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, with another former World Champion, Romain Febvre, lying third for the Kawasaki Racing Team ahead of Herlings.
There are several intriguing additions to the Entry List for Sardegna, with Team HRC signing Roan van de Moosdijk in to replace the injured Ruben Fernandez, while fellow Dutchman Brian Bogers moves into the Fantic Factory Racing team alongside the winner of last year’s second GP race, Glenn Coldenhoff.
The Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team is another one struck with injury problems, but they have recruited the current FIM World Sand Races Champion Todd Kellett from the UK to come and play in very familiar beach-type sand, although he might wish that the races were about two hours longer! He will line up alongside the 2022 MXGP of Sardegna winner Calvin Vlaanderen.
The MX2 World Championship continues to be unpredictable, as Kay de Wolf of Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing leads the series by 12 points from Simon Laengenfelder, who has made a consistent startfor Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing. De Wolf won race one, and nearly his first overall Grand Prix, here in 202. He will be looking to extend his points lead, although reigning World MX2 Champion Andrea Adamo is now third in the standings for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing after winning the second race in Spain, and will be keen to build on that momentum at a track where he knows that he will not be favourite!
Thibault Benistant had a good weekend in similar sand last week, and returns to a track where he has been on the overall podium twice for the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team. Monster Energy Triumph Racing could be a force with Dane Mikkel Haarup on form, and watch out for Lucas Coenen and Liam Everts to join their respective teammates in what could be another stunning battle in the sand!
The WMX Women’s World Motocross Championship holds its second round here after a stunning home win for Daniela Guillen in Spain, but she’ll have close competition again from Lotte van Drunen.
